Understanding Depression in Young Adults
Depression is a common mental health disorder affecting young adults today. Although depression can be debilitating, it is a treatable condition. That’s why STRiV Forward offers depression treatment for young adults as part of our transitional living program. By providing comprehensive mental health care, we can help our students pursue their goals without being held back by depression.
Common Symptoms of Depression in Young People
Someone who is having a depressive episode can experience a wide variety of symptoms, including:
Risk Factors and Triggers in Young Adults
A combination of social, biological, and psychological factors can influence the likelihood of someone developing depression. Some of these risk factors include:
It’s normal for someone to feel depressed, especially after the loss of a loved one. However, when symptoms interfere with your ability to focus in school, work, or participate in life in general, it’s time to seek the help of a mental health professional.
Why Early Intervention Matters for Long-Term Well-Being
Adolescent depression is serious, as it can contribute to health problems or increase the risk of suicide in vulnerable young adults. Early interventions for mental health can reduce stressors and act as an early warning for more serious issues. The lessons learned from these interventions reduce stigma, encourage one to seek help when needed, and improve overall well-being.

Our Evidence-Based, Individualized Treatment Plans
Each treatment plan is made up of evidence-based therapies tailored to help young adults. What is included in each treatment plan varies by student, but it’s typically a combination of psychotherapy, wellness education, and medication management.
A Therapeutic, Community-Focused Approach to Mental Health
STRiV, as a community, encourages students to improve their mental health and grow from real-life experiences through community events and service.
Our Holistic and Evidence-Based Approach to Treating Depression
Depression is commonly treated with a combination of psychotherapy (talk therapy) and medications. Lifestyle changes – such as encouraging healthy sleep, exercise, and eating habits – can also improve mood and lessen the symptoms of depression. What is typically included in our treatment plans is:
Medication Management and Antidepressant Options
When Antidepressant Medications May Be Recommended
The most common medications used in treating depression are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). These are antidepressant drugs designed to increase serotonin in the brain to treat mood and anxiety disorders. Antidepressants are FDA-approved to treat depression and include common medications such as Prozac (fluoxetine).
Medications are commonly recommended alongside talk therapy to reduce symptoms, bring back functioning, and make you feel more comfortable. Antidepressants are typically temporary, and many eventually can reduce or wean off them entirely once they become stabilized.
Collaboration Between Therapists, Psychiatrists, and Medical Providers
Our team at STRiV is prepared to collaborate with other professionals as needed to provide the optimal care to your loved one. This allows all causes and symptoms of depression to be addressed, from physical symptoms and causes to psychological ones.
Integrating Psychiatry and Therapeutic Support for Comprehensive Care
We believe in a comprehensive approach to care, so students have access to a wide variety of therapeutic modalities to assist them. Students can live in an environment that encourages mental wellness and the practice of healthy coping skills.
Family Therapy and Parent Involvement in Treatment
STRiV Forward recognizes that support from a student’s caregivers or parents can make a significant difference in their recovery. That’s why we involve parents and caregivers throughout the treatment process and offer family therapy. These programs and therapies help families understand how to best support their loved one’s recovery, and help build connection, trust, and healthy independence.
Peer Support, Mentorship, and Community Activities
Building a healthy support system is key to recovery at STRiV Forward. Students interact with their peers, mentors, and community to build connections and find mutual support and understanding.
Developing Coping Skills and Building Confidence
Life Skills and Emotional Resilience Training
Our mentors are qualified to teach students several skills needed for independent living, such as:
Improving Self-Esteem and Sense of Purpose
Our staff is sensitive to the needs of our students, especially those struggling with self-esteem or gender identity. We work to build confidence, help students express themselves, and find what brings them joy.
Managing Social Media and Technology Use in Healthy Ways
Although we place no restrictions on technology and social media use, we do help those with a process addiction. We provide support to students who need help managing their technology use so they can focus on the here and now.
Supporting Academic and Career Development During Recovery
STRiV, along with the local community, offers opportunities for higher education or early career development. For students looking to advance their education or break into the job field, we can provide the expert coaching and counseling needed to do so.
Treatment Options and Levels of Care
Outpatient and Transitional Living Support for Depression
Depression can be managed with the right professional support. As such, both our outpatient treatment and transitional living support program are tailored to help students learning to manage or recover from their depression.
How Our Therapeutic Transitional Living Model Differs from Residential Treatment
The main difference between our therapeutic programs for young adults with depression and residential treatment is the amount of freedom our students have. Our students live independently and are responsible for caring for their living space.
Collaboration With Outside Therapists, Psychiatrists, and Primary Care Providers
Students needing care that STRiV cannot provide can still receive the healthcare they need while here. We are committed to providing comprehensive care, which includes the use of outside help or family primary care providers.
Continuum of Care for Mental Health and Mood Disorders
Just because a student graduates from STRiV doesn’t mean that they are left high and dry. Instead, personalized discharge plans are created for each student to ensure that they continue to receive the mental health care and support.
