Why Families and Students Choose STRiV Forward

STRiV Forward sets itself apart by offering a unique, supportive environment tailored to help young adults build independence and confidence.

Safe Space for Growth

We understand how challenging it can be to transition into adulthood. Our program offers a supportive environment where students can learn from failure and try again without the pressure of perfection, fostering resilience and confidence.

Personalized Support

Each student receives tailored mental health care designed to promote community, growth, and accountability. Our small, boutique setting ensures individualized attention with a 1:4 mentor-to-student ratio, enabling meaningful connections and personalized guidance.

Community, Not Just Treatment

Students are integrated into a supportive community rather than feeling like just a participant in a treatment program. We encourage and help facilitate social connections within the program and in the outside community. Helping students “find their people” is an important element of being at STRiV.

Freedom to Pursue Passions

We encourage students to engage in hobbies and activities they love. Our flexible environment promotes self-discovery and confidence, helping students develop independence through meaningful experiences.

Long-Term Relationships

Our dedicated staff has an exceptionally low turnover rate, allowing mentors to build lasting, trust-based relationships with students. This stability supports ongoing growth and personalized mentoring.

Structured Opportunities for Reflection and Growth

Within our safe and supportive environment, students are encouraged to reflect, learn from their experiences, and grow at their own pace. The combination of peer and professional support creates a nurturing space for meaningful development.

Start Your Journey Toward Independence

Getting started at STRiV Forward is easy with our step-by-step process.

  1. Launch: Upon arrival, students settle into their new apartment, begin to make connections, review expectations, and work with the team to create a Road Map for their success while at STRiV, and beyond. The journey begins!
  2. Initial Call: Speak with our friendly Admissions Director to explore whether we are the right fit for your student
  3. Assessment: We work with you to review clinical and readiness criteria, including speaking to past professionals, assessing a general level of safety and stability, and evaluating the student’s desire to work with the STRiV team. It is also important for the student and family to get to know STRiV, including participating in a virtual or in-person tour of our offices and apartments, and to meet the team.
  4. Acceptance/Admission: Once a mutual fit is determined, students are accepted into the program, and an admission date is established. Preliminary discussions may also help determine the level of structure/support that would be beneficial to have in place from day one.

A Comprehensive, Evidence-Based Approach

STRiV Forward combines evidence-based psychotherapy, psychiatry, and holistic modalities for a comprehensive approach to ADHD treatment. Combined with our therapeutic living program and life skills program, we provide a safe and encouraging environment for students to learn and practice the skills they will need for adult life. This includes an emphasis on healthy living, as lifestyle changes, such as proper diet and exercise, improve overall wellness and help manage conditions like ADHD.

Behavioral Therapy and Psychotherapy

Our ADHD treatment approach includes behavioral interventions and psychotherapies tailored to treat neurodevelopmental disorders. This includes therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), positive psychology, and trauma-informed care for an individualized, integrated approach to treatment.

Executive Functioning and Life Skills Development

Young adults with ADHD tend to struggle with various executive functioning and life skills, such as time management, social skills, and organizational skills. To help our students learn and practice these skills, we utilize trained coaches and mentors qualified to instruct students with neurodevelopmental disorders. Students receive individualized support from their mentors, who encourage them to use the skills they learn and apply them to their daily lives.

Daily Life With ADHD Support at STRiV Forward

Structure That Supports Growth

Each student receives a structured schedule personalized for their needs while living at STRiV. This includes time for therapy, education, coaching, socialization, and volunteer opportunities within our community. Paired with our freedom-based approach, students are in an environment that encourages personal growth, accountability, and self-reliance.

Practicing Skills in Real Life

Part of skills training at STRiV is taking advantage of our real-world environment to practice learned skills. Students must utilize essential life skills, such as practicing self-care, budgeting, managing their time, and keeping their apartments clean. It’s a safe place where students can try and fail and try again as they ingrain these important life skills.

ADHD, Mental Health, and Co-Occurring Challenges

Mental Health Conditions and ADHD

It’s common for ADHD to co-occur with other developmental and mental disorders. Autism, anxiety, and depression all commonly co-occur with ADHD, especially if the student has experienced trauma or other upsetting life changes. The rise of social media has made it easier than ever for bullying and unhealthy societal expectations to damage self-esteem and identity. As such, these co-occurring challenges are addressed alongside ADHD during treatment.

ADHD and Substance Use Considerations

Sometimes, individuals with ADHD are driven to try to cope with their condition on their own terms. This can lead to substance abuse in an effort to mask or numb ADHD symptoms. Misused stimulant medications taken without doctor oversight can also lead to dependence and/or substance use disorders. Because of this risk, substance abuse education is utilized at STRiV Forward, along with treatment for past mild substance use.

Evidence-Based ADHD Treatment You Can Trust

Research-Informed and Credible Care

Each therapy, workshop, skill-training, and coaching method used at STRiV Forward is backed by the latest in scientific research. This ensures your loved one receives the best level of care scientifically proven to help them manage and treat their ADHD.

Long-Term Success Beyond Symptoms

ADHD may be a lifelong condition for young adults, but it can be managed. Plenty of adults with ADHD go on to live successful and happy lives. Part of treatment at STRiV is showing students that, although they have a condition, they are capable of managing it with courage and self-reliance.

ADHD Medication Management for Young Adults

Medication as Part of a Treatment Plan

Some students may need medication to help manage their ADHD. As such, we work closely with psychiatrists and other healthcare providers to help students who need medication obtain it. This is a careful process that ensures that students are comfortable and safe, as it can take time to find the correct medications. When found, medications can become an important part of any ADHD treatment plan.

Stimulant Medications

By far the most common medications used to treat ADHD are methylphenidate drugs (ex. Ritalin) and amphetamines (ex. Adderall). These are central nervous system stimulants that help students focus and control impulsive behavior. Though helpful, stimulants used for treating ADHD are controlled substances, and as such, students requiring them are carefully monitored to reduce risk.

Non-Stimulants and Alternative Medications

Students may need medications that are non-stimulants to help manage their ADHD, such as atomoxetine and antidepressants. Atomoxetine (ex. Strattera) is a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that increases norepinephrine levels in the brain, thereby improving focus and attention.

Antidepressants can sometimes be prescribed to students who also experience symptoms of depression or anxiety alongside their ADHD.

Understanding Side Effects and Medication Use

ADHD medications work by manipulating or increasing neurotransmitters such as dopamine and norepinephrine to aid in focus and attention. However, these medications can cause side effects that can be uncomfortable, such as sleep problems, decreased appetite, headaches, and moodiness.

Our psychiatrists and healthcare providers work with students to manage these symptoms and facilitate safe, proper medication use. Students learn how to take their medication on time, the correct dosage to use, and how to mitigate side effects. With supervision, safe medication use becomes a skill that students learn to manage their ADHD long-term.

Core ADHD-Focused Groups at STRiV Forward

Community Integration Group

Our Community Integration Group is designed to optimize the vocational, social, and personal attributes of our students to facilitate successful independent living. By participating in our community, our students are empowered to explore their individual interests, attributes, and skills. Students with ADHD find acceptance and understanding through their new community.

Life Skills
Group

Our life skills group is facilitated by our Health and Wellness and Executive Functioning coaches and focuses on helping students develop the crucial life skills needed to achieve sustainable progress and personal growth. This is taught through a blend of lessons, conversations, practice, games, and activities that help students transition to productive adulthood. Our life skills group is specially tailored to meet the wide range of needs and challenges faced by our students.

Process Group

Our process group at STRiV gives our students a place to process their thoughts and emotions in a therapeutic setting, led by a program therapist. This program is typically unstructured, allowing group members to discuss various topics, emotions, and concerns brought to the group by participants. Members provide mutual support and feedback, which helps form interpersonal interactions with others.

Students with ADHD can find understanding from others to “get” what they are going through, giving them the courage needed to keep trying in their endeavors to grow.

The Art of Social Connection

Our Art of Social Connection program takes a community-based approach to supporting students in developing social skills. This is done by incorporating other group members from the community who experience similar challenges to social interaction as the program students.

Our program therapist leads participants through exercises, activities, and conversations designed to help members improve their confidence and develop skills. Each week has a dedicated topic to help teach a social skill necessary for independent living.

Purpose, Values, Direction + Feedback Group

This group is designed to help students increase their group cohesion and provide and receive feedback to improve our community. Led by our Director of Operations, group members are instructed on ways to effectively communicate feedback, learn how to respond, and develop an understanding of when/how to follow up.

Feedback lets us know what’s working and what’s not, helping us stay on track for achieving our goals in helping students from all walks of life achieve independence.

The Role of Family Members and Loved Ones

Family Involvement in ADHD Treatment

Being involved in your loved one’s ADHD treatment is crucial, as it can lead to improvements in overall wellness and functioning. At STRiV, families work closely with our team and outside healthcare professionals to create the perfect treatment plan for their loved ones.

Parent Training and Education

At STRiV, parents receive support and education to best help their emerging adults achieve independence. With conditions like ADHD, families need to understand what their loved one is going through and how best to help them. This creates a safe and healthy environment where our students feel supported and encouraged by their families.

Benefits of Our ADHD Programs For Young Adults

A Therapeutic Transitional Living Model

Students are immersed in a supportive environment that mimics a real-world setting while including professional oversight. Each student lives in a fully furnished apartment where they are responsible for managing their living space.

With no curfew or technology restrictions, students are also responsible for managing their time. This environment encourages accountability and helps students learn, understand, and practice the skills they need for independent living.

Individual Therapy and Group Support

STRiV takes a psychosocial approach to treatment, which addresses the psychological and social factors that impact an individual’s wellness and functioning. Individual therapy and group support provide the well-rounded, comprehensive treatment needed to address these concerns and improve overall wellness in our students.

Executive Function Coaching and Mentorship

Students with ADHD especially struggle with executive functions. To meet this need, STRiV Forward utilizes expert coaches and mentors who are trained to support students with neurodiverse needs. With a 1:4 mentor-to-student ratio, each student receives the individual attention needed to help them learn critical life skills, including executive functioning.

Signs It May Be Time to Seek ADHD Treatment

Common Signs of ADHD in Young People

ADHD symptoms typically appear during childhood and can continue well into adulthood. School-age adolescents, in particular, tend to display signs such as difficulty paying attention, being easily distracted, hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and trouble organizing tasks.

This can affect their school work and result in slipping grades, which is usually an indicator of ADHD. Young adults and teens may be fired at work due to mistakes caused by ADHD or begin to neglect necessary tasks at home. In general, ADHD makes it difficult to live normally unless healthy coping skills and other therapeutic interventions are in place.

ADHD Diagnosis and Assessment

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) provides guidelines for diagnosing and treating attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which is characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It’s important for those who suspect they may have ADHD to receive a comprehensive evaluation by a qualified healthcare provider to determine an accurate diagnosis.

This diagnosis is essential for receiving behavioral interventions and other services that can help young adults with ADHD succeed at work, school, and home. As such, STRiV Forward is equipped to help students who currently have a diagnosis and to collaborate with healthcare providers to obtain a diagnosis. We understand that sometimes young adults may slip through the cracks, and we are here to assist them in getting the services they need for independent living.

FAQs

What is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. It’s a commonly occurring condition, with the overall prevalence of US adults aged 18 to 44 years with ADHD at 4.4%. Approximately one-third of children diagnosed with ADHD retain the same diagnosis into adulthood.

In these cases, it becomes adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, which refers to ADHD that persists into adulthood. ADHD can affect your self-esteem, make it difficult to work or go to school, and negatively impact your relationships with others.
