Structured Opportunities for Reflection and Growth

Within our safe and supportive environment, students are encouraged to reflect, learn from their experiences, and grow at their own pace. The combination of peer and professional support creates a nurturing space for meaningful development.

Freedom to Pursue Passions

We encourage students to engage in hobbies and activities they love. Our flexible environment promotes self-discovery and confidence, helping students develop independence through meaningful experiences.

Understanding Executive Functioning Skills

Group of young adults working in notebooks

Executive function skills are the mental processes that enable us to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks successfully. These essential skills are needed for a person to filter distractions, prioritize tasks, set and achieve goals, and control impulses.

At STRiV, our initial assessment evaluates 12 executive skills to help us identify where executive coaching can be most beneficial. These executive skills are:

  • Response inhibition
  • Working memory
  • Emotional control
  • Task initiation
  • Sustained attention
  • Planning/prioritizing
  • Organization
  • Time management
  • Flexibility
  • Metacognition
  • Goal-directed persistence
  • Stress tolerance

How We Support Executive Function Development

Personalized Executive Function Coaching for Young Adults

Our in-person executive functioning coaching is designed to meet the specific needs of each student. As such, we are well aware of the neurodiversity our students can have. Students struggling with conditions such as ADHD, autism, and more will receive targeted coaching that helps them develop strategies that best help them. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to treatment at STRiV, and we pride ourselves on providing a personalized experience for each of our students.

Integrating Coaching Into Daily Life

The best skills are those that can be put into practice. As such, students are given opportunities to utilize the skills they learn in coaching in real, everyday life situations. Students meet with coaches several times a week to learn skills such as emotional regulation and problem-solving. Then, students integrate these skills into their daily lives with the help of their mentors.

For example, students live in fully furnished apartments at STRiV with private bedrooms and bathrooms. However, they, along with their roommate, are responsible for keeping things clean, doing their own laundry, budgeting, grocery shopping, and more. A student struggling with problem-solving or multi-tasking will have plenty of opportunities to practice doing so with the gentle guidance of their mentor and coach.

Evidence-Based Approach to Skill Development

Each student at STRiV is under the care of industry experts who are specially trained in helping young adults in their professional development. This involves creating a roadmap that helps students set obtainable goals and achieve them. Students are involved in this process, which gives them an active role in their skill development.

Our coaches utilize evidence-based therapies and approaches, such as self-management training, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Skills like creating a checklist or a to-do list, practicing stress-relieving techniques, and breaking big tasks into smaller ones are all taught in coaching.

With the help of our team and evidence-based approaches, students see a noticeable improvement in their development. This returns agency to students and shows them that they can achieve great things if they are willing to work for it.

Helping Young Adults Thrive

Life Skills and Executive Functioning in a Semi-Independent Living Program

Life skills and executive function work from the heart of STRiV’s approach—every activity and lesson is built around helping students develop strong planning, focus, and self-management. These abilities are crucial because they let students manage daily responsibilities, succeed in school or work, and handle stress and social situations. With consistent coaching, real-world practice, and daily routines, students gain the tools they need for confidence and independence.

Structured, Supportive Environment for Skill Growth

STRiV Forward is a program that fosters an environment where students feel safe enough to try, fail, and try again. Life at STRiV is much like what a college student or any other young adult would expect in terms of freedom and independence. Students live in apartments and then attend structured events, coaching, and therapeutic activities throughout the day. However, students do have responsibilities, and they are encouraged to develop executive skills throughout their stay.

Our coaches and mentors are here to guide students in forming healthy habits and skills they will need to be successful in a career, higher education, and life in general. Although students are responsible for tasks such as arriving at class on time or turning in assignments, professionals are around to offer assistance as needed.  This safety net gives students the confidence they need to not just figure out how to best emulate the skills they learn, but to discover who they are in the process.

Life Skills Group for Young Adults

Skill-building is an important aspect of life at STRiV. Students practice these skills with the help of our Health and Wellness and Executive Functioning Coaches. The goal is to help students develop the critical life skills needed for sustainable progress and personal growth. Some life skills students learn at STRiV include:
  • Budgeting household expenses
  • Multitasking to keep apartments clean and neat
  • Managing their time wisely
  • Practicing good sleep habits
  • Problem solving
  • Communicating with peers
Our Life Skills Group consists of a blend of lessons, conversations, practice, games, and activities, which help students develop foundational skills needed for independence.

Applying Skills in Real-World Contexts

Many high school students struggle with the transition into college and beyond because, for the most part, their lives are structured for them. Now they must figure out how to be adults with little real-world experience.

STRiV, in response, has created a carefully curated experience that mimics real-life experiences while having professional assistance on standby. Students will accomplish tasks that teach these skills, such as:
  • Using mindfulness and other stress-reducing techniques to learn self-regulation
  • Adapting to social situations with peers to learn self-monitoring
  • Eating a healthy diet and practicing good sleep habits to learn self-care
  • Becoming more in touch with feelings, thoughts, and actions through journaling to learn self-awareness
  • And more!
These skills are learned and honed through apartment living, recreational activities, vocational opportunities, college, and community outreach and volunteering events. This gives students ample practice to learn the skills they need for full independence.

Daily Structure and Coaching Routine at STRiV Forward

Typical Day for
Students

The typical day-to-day of each student will vary depending on their individual needs. However, a typical day involves a combination of group activities, school with a mentor, studying, coaching, and free time. If needed, students will have time to receive therapy or medication management.

Students go over their goal roadmap each week to ensure they are meeting their goals and to identify areas of struggle. STRiV carefully balances structured routines to give students time to rest and take care of various responsibilities. They also have opportunities to explore the community of Orem, Utah, to further foster independence.

Weekly Rhythm and Community Activities

STRiV creates a weekly rhythm for our students, which helps them get used to maintaining responsibilities. Rhythms are less strict than to-do lists and offer students a less stressful and restrictive experience. Utilizing these methods helps students learn how to align their activities with their goal setting, which naturally puts them on a path of growth.

Students are required to attend three community activities per week. These activities help students find their place in the community as young adults by helping those in need.

Executive Function Coaching Sessions

At STRiV, every student receives a minimum of two one-on-one sessions per week with our executive function coach, a cornerstone of our program. In addition, students participate in a weekly group session focused on executive function and essential life skills.

Partnership With Families and External Providers

STRiV works to ensure that families and their loved ones’ existing care providers are involved in the therapeutic process. We provide family support as needed and are transparent in the care of their loved ones.

In some cases, a student may need the help of an external treatment provider for medical or mental health care. As such, we are prepared to involve them in our collaborative partnership to ensure the well-being of each of our students.
