Helping Young Adults Develop Independence

Young adults can face serious challenges that hold them back from independence. Undiagnosed mental health challenges, failure to launch, and more can prevent young people from achieving their full potential. Young adults transitioning from high school or foster care may need a safe, encouraging environment to learn and grow.

STRiV Forward is dedicated to helping young adults overcome these challenges and learn the skills they need to achieve independence. We help our students realize that their decisions matter and empower them to make healthy, mature choices. With professional help and a safe place to thrive, anyone can achieve independence.

Gain Independent Living Skills With Apartment Style Living

Our transitional housing program is designed to mimic a real-world setting as much as possible with apartment-style living. Each apartment is fully furnished, with private bedrooms and bathrooms, ensuring each student’s privacy and comfort. This home-like approach teaches self-sufficiency and confidence as students practice essential skills such as cooking, budgeting, and maintaining a living space.

Having apartment-style living assists with failure to launch, as it takes students out of a familiar environment, or a temporary one, such as an emergency shelter, to provide the stability needed for growth.

Safe Spaces That Support Growth & Healing

STRiV Forward takes the safety of our students seriously. Our campus is staffed by caring professionals who help guide our students and look out for their well-being. Here, students are free to safely fail, regroup, and try again. Over time, this helps build confidence and resilience, leading to improved self-esteem. All of which facilitates continuous growth and promotes emotional healing.

A Community-Based Model

Along with supportive housing, STRiV Forward offers accessible community resources for all our students. Students have opportunities to integrate into our supportive community through volunteer opportunities, hobbies, events, work, school, and more. This gives students access to local career opportunities, socialization, support, and more.

Preparing Young Adults for the Real World

STRiV Forward utilizes a whole-person wellness approach to therapeutic transitional living. This combines several avenues of professional and peer support designed to help our students grow into well-rounded adults. Students naturally learn to prepare for the real world as they fully engage with our program. Taking this approach reduces stress and helps our students empower themselves to make the changes needed for successful independence.

Mental Health Support & Individual Therapy

Young people often struggle with their mental health, especially if they come from a marginalized group such as LGBTQ youth. Our response is to provide personalized, evidence-based, trauma-informed mental and behavioral health care. Some examples include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). This allows us to address a wide variety of challenges, such as mental illness, low self-esteem, and self-sabotage.

Group Therapy & Peer Support

An important aspect of life at STRiV is socialization and peer support. This creates a support network that students can draw on long after they graduate. Students use group therapy to share wisdom and experiences and to realize they are not alone in their struggles. Our process groups are designed not just to teach essential skills, but to allow students to learn and grow together.

Mentorship, Case Management & Life Coaching

STRiV offers wraparound services to ensure each student receives the personalized attention they need to thrive. This includes on-site support services, such as case management services, and a 1:4 mentor-to-student ratio for individualized coaching/mentorship. Students learn several essential skills, such as financial literacy, executive functioning, communication, and self-awareness.

Partnering With Families to Support Lasting Success

We believe that parents and families are important to the healing process. As such, we provide a parental support program that provides psychoeducation, family therapy as needed, and other resources to facilitate a healthy home life. Our goal is to help families create healthy boundaries, improve communication, and begin the process of a healthy separation needed for their loved one’s independence.

Develop Skills for School, Work, Home, & Well‑Being

Our students at STRiV naturally learn and practice essential skills that help them thrive as independent adults. This includes the skills needed to maintain a home, succeed at school, hold down a job, and care for themselves. We offer specialized coaching and mentorship for these specific skills, such as academic and vocational counseling, wellness education, and life-skills support.

Students may also learn new skills as needed with the help of our community, such as taking driving lessons, learning to navigate public transport, and practicing healthy relaxation.

Daily Structure & Programming in Our Transitional Living Program

Our transitional living program in Park City integrates stable housing services with a personalized daily schedule. Each schedule will vary based on personal needs, but there are similarities between them all. Students have time to receive mental health care, coaching, and mentorship. There is time throughout the day for study, a job, and recreation. Community events are common throughout the week, offering opportunities to volunteer or participate in exciting recreational activities.

STRiV Forward carefully balances each schedule, preventing burnout and giving students the space to grow and socialize.

Integrated Support for Mental Health & Co-Occurring Conditions

STRiV Forward is equipped to assist students with mild to moderate mental health issues and conditions. The short-term goal is to help students get a handle on their issues so they can further stabilize and focus on treatment. Eventually, students learn how to overcome their challenges and manage chronic conditions healthily. We can help students with a wide range of common mental health disorders and concerns, such as self-sabotage and poor self-esteem.

Anxiety Disorders & Emotional Regulation Challenges

Generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder are some of the most common disorders affecting young adults. Students may also struggle with emotional regulation and expressing themselves in healthy, productive ways.

Depression, Bipolar Disorder & Mood Instability

Mood disorders are also commonly diagnosed in young adults. Traumatic events, bullying, and life changes can exacerbate the development of these conditions. Bipolar disorder and mood instability issues are typically diagnosed during late adolescence, facilitating the need for psychoeducation in managing chronic conditions.

ADHD & Executive Functioning Challenges

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can sometimes go undiagnosed, leading to executive functioning challenges that distress and discourage young adults. Young adults with ADHD may struggle to focus, control impulses, or manage time wisely.

Personality Disorders

Though not as common as other disorders, personality disorders can be present in young adults. These disorders make it difficult for one to connect with others, leading to social isolation, self-destructive habits, and poor self-esteem.

Co-Occurring Disorders

When someone has a mental health challenge, they often have one that co-occurs. Anxiety and depression commonly co-occur along with ADHD and mild autism. However, there are co-occurring disorders that young adults in particular can face, such as eating disorders, self-harm, psychosis, and substance abuse.

Serious conditions that require inpatient care, such as active substance use, are not treated at STRiV. However, conditions that are moderate or in the past, such as past substance use, can be addressed on a case-by-case basis to ensure student safety.

Knowing When a Transitional Living Program is Right For Your Young Adult

STRiV Forward is designed to help students who struggle with independence but are motivated to make lasting changes. We can help students with mild to moderate mental health issues, including past (but not current) substance use. Some of the most common challenges faced by students at STRiV include executive functioning struggles, mental health issues such as ADHD or anxiety, or the need for failure-to-thrive support.
A transitional living program may be right for your loved one if they want to achieve independence but need specialized support and/or a safe place to practice their skills. Sometimes, a space away from family can be the fresh start needed to take independence seriously.

Each student is assessed to ensure eligibility and to determine whether they can safely live semi-independently in our apartments.

Guiding Families Toward Lasting Success

One of our goals at STRiV is to help families foster healthy communication and independence among their members. As such, families are closely involved in the care of their loved one while at STRiV. Part of this support is helping families establish healthy boundaries for successful independence and ongoing growth.

Become Part of The Community That Empowers Young Adults

We are committed to providing a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for our students at STRiV. Part of our home-like approach to transitional living includes access to our supportive community, which includes peers and trained professionals.

Here, our students can be young adults who can try, fail, and try again. This builds resilience, encourages students to come out of their shells, and seek their place in the world as young adults. There’s a world waiting to be explored, and it begins with a step into our encouraging community.

FAQs

A transitional living program is a program where young adults learn and practice life skills in preparation for adult life. For example, they learn how to budget, cook meals, enroll in school, find a job, and more. The goal is to help young adults build a solid foundation for successful independent living.

Transitional living programs are not the same as inpatient or residential treatment. These programs are best suited for people with severe conditions that require consistent medical oversight, such as active substance use disorders. Although there can be transitional living programs for those transitioning into sober living, young adult transitional programs are focused more on mastering independent life skills.

Parents and families are included in our transitional living program in several ways. Firstly, families are kept up to date on their loved one’s progress through regular communication. Families may also utilize family therapy, if needed, along with other resources, such as psychoeducation. Our goal is to help families better understand their loved ones, foster healthy boundaries, and promote healthy separation to foster lasting independence.

Yes, STRiV Forward provides academic support through coaching, academic counseling, and burnout prevention. Students enjoy a close rapport with their mentors, who can help them learn effective study techniques and progress forward in their academic careers.
