Building Independent Living Skills That Last

Independence is a practice, and many young adults are still developing the skills needed to lead their lives. That’s why we focus on teaching them practical living skills that prepare them for independent living.

Managing Daily Responsibilities

We teach young adults how to manage their time, maintain a clean living space, stay organized, and other healthy living skills. These eventually become the baseline for their adult life.

Creating Structure in Daily Life

Students work together with staff members and personal on-site mentors to create self-directed routines. These routines are intentionally balanced around achieving stability and physical well-being, both during their time in transitional living and beyond.

Developing Confidence in Decision-Making

We believe in building confidence through experience. Our young adults make their own choices the way that anyone else would. Then, we’ll take it a step further by helping them look honestly at the outcomes and teach them ways to grow from consequences. The goal is to encourage action through trusting their own judgment through practice and support.

Practicing Life Skills in Real Time

The only way to know what it feels like to plan and cook a balanced meal is to actually do it. Hands-on experience is required for successful independent living, which is why we help them practice without risking feeling lost or alone.

Strengthening Social and Community Connections

The combination of healthy peer relationships and shared apartment living gives our students a built-in social safety net. This helps them stay connected to other young adults who often share their experiences, and it helps them stay accountable to themselves and staff members.

What Support Looks Like Day to Day

Being independent doesn’t mean you can’t ask for help or that you have to do everything alone. It means having the confidence to make your own decisions and to know when you need support.

Mentorship and Daily Guidance

Our on-site staff members help students plan their day. But more importantly, they ensure these plans see follow-through by helping them with the unpredictable emotional and logistical hurdles of everyday life.

Our mentors provide them with feedback so they can adjust and change their habits as needed. They become trusted partners who help them through busy schedules and tough work weeks, even social misunderstandings that can often be draining and isolating without someone to talk to.

Therapeutic and Emotional Support

The focus for our Ogden transitional living environment is always independence, but emotional health is a significant part of that. Students participate in individual therapy and collaborative group sessions. They also receive tools like CBT to help them process emotions in real time, even after completing the transitional housing program.

Case Management and Coordination

Our team provides thorough case management, including coordination with outside medical providers and medication management. We also keep every involved family member informed on a student’s progress. This management takes place behind the scenes and with family, so the students can focus primarily on their personal goals.

Community Outings and Activities

We want our students to feel like they’re participants in the local culture and community. Our community outings and recreational trips give them a chance to experience Ogden and the surrounding Weber County area through a new lens.

Volunteer Opportunities and Real-World Engagement

We believe that community outreach and engagement are some of the best ways to build confidence. Our mentors encourage students to explore local volunteer opportunities, so they’re both practicing and learning life skills while helping others.

Supporting Mental Health and Well-Being

We’re very intentional about looking at mental health through a wider lens. The ultimate goal is always emotional stability and balance, regardless of the student’s experience.

Building Emotional Awareness

We help young adults find their way out of the “survival mode” they’ve been living in. A focus on managing intense emotions and recognizing behaviors helps them be more self-aware and understand their thoughts — even choose new ones to replace those that no longer serve them.

Developing Coping Strategies

Our therapy sessions teach some of the most powerful coping strategies, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Students can use these strategies in real-world situations to protect their peace and progress. These tools become part of their everyday lives to ensure therapy remains relevant to the challenges they’re actively dealing with.

Improving Stability Over Time

The students have already learned that real change can take time. Here, they’ll learn that solidifying that change takes consistency. We lean into daily routines to help students feel more ready for the next chapters of their lives.

Collaboration with Providers

Continuity of care is vital at any stage, but especially during transitional living. We work with a student’s existing healthcare providers and mental health professionals so that treatments are aligned and effective.

Designed for Young Adults, Not Institutional Settings

It’s important that we clarify what we are not. This program is intentionally and fundamentally different from other institutional environments. This includes:
  • Emergency shelters
  • Nursing homes
  • Memory care facilities
  • Assisted living facilities
  • Senior living communities
Our students live in actual apartments and participate in their own lives with empowering support. While an emergency shelter may also offer similar programs, such as mental healthcare and medication management, it is notably different from our transitional living program because of its focus on skill building rather than on-site care and access to transitional housing.

Removing that “facility” feel also means there’s less temptation for the student to wait to be told what to do next. They’re responsible for their apartments just like they would in an independent living situation off-site. It’s healthy accountability that leads to the true self-reliance young adults need to trust themselves when life gets challenging.

Serving Ogden and Weber County

Our location offers an incredible setting for young adults to find their footing. We proudly serve students looking for transitional care in Ogden, South Ogden, and the broader Weber County, Utah area. The stunning mountain backdrop, combined with the area’s access to quality education and employment, makes it the perfect spot to focus on growth and well-being.

Helping Your Young Adult Move Forward

Moving forward can feel scary and overwhelming, even for the loved one in a young adult’s life. We want to make the process as transparent as possible while giving them a clear path. Through STRiV transitional living, everything from a student’s social life to their daily activities becomes an opportunity to learn who they really are — and how powerful they already are in creating the life they want to live.

We see this as a partnership between all parties. We provide structure, mentors provide guidance, and your young adult puts it together with their own efforts and learned behaviors.

FAQs

No. Our program is built exclusively for young adults who are fully capable of independence but need mentorship to launch their lives in earnest.

Our program includes on-site mentorship, individual and group therapies, life skills coaching, and teaching methods for managing mental and emotional health. We adjust the dials on these types of supports based on what the student needs to build their own sense of self-sufficiency.

Yes, we believe that both social and recreational activities are must-haves for a well-balanced life. Building friendships is just as important as building life skills, so we organize community outings, outreach, or volunteer opportunities. We also encourage daily activities that feed their passions and creative side, both to improve their well-being and to support their emotional and mental health.

Yes! While social and community outings are phenomenal for improving and stabilizing mental health, it’s still a pillar of healthcare that deserves undivided attention. Students have access to on-site therapy, and our case management team helps coordinate with other healthcare providers regarding treatments or medication management as needed.

Absolutely, and we often encourage it. Students can and should take ownership of their daily schedules, but we also want parents and loved ones to support them however they can. Our goal is to help the entire family transition into a healthier dynamic.

While we often do support individuals who have completed addiction treatment or similar programs, we are not a detoxification or rehabilitation center. Our focus and dedication are solely focused on teaching living skills, improving mental well-being, and shepherding young adults into independent living.

Our program feels and functions like real life. We have an apartment-style setting, a low 1:4 mentor-to-student ratio, and a freedom-first approach that encourages autonomy without ever leaving students feeling unsupported.
